Garment Export Market

According to customs statistics, China's clothing exports amounted to US $62 billion 490 million in 1-7 months in 2008, an increase of only 3.38% over the same period last year, and the export growth rate slowed down significantly compared with the same period last year.

In the 1-7 month of this year, China's clothing industry is mainly exported to Asia, Europe and North America, and exports to the three major regions reach US $56 billion 838 million, accounting for 90.95% of the total volume of clothing exports in the country.

From the perspective of export growth, China's clothing exports to Asia and North America have been in negative growth this year, while exports to Europe have rebounded sharply. The total export volume of the previous July reached US $21 billion 532 million, an increase of 25% over the same period last year.

Due to the cancellation of quotas, China's clothing exports to the EU rebounded sharply this year, and the export volume increased by 45.5% over the same period last year. Germany, Britain, France and Italy were the main trading places, and their exports increased by 42.5%, 51%, 43%, 37.5%, respectively. In addition, the export growth rates to Spain, Holland and other countries were as high as 54.7% and 78.3% respectively.

Before July, our export clothing to North America was 11 billion 315 million US dollars, down 8.3% from the same period last year, accounting for 18.11% of the total, which is the third largest export market.

The US is still the largest trade area, but its exports are 4.3% less than the same period last year, accounting for 15.44%. In addition, exports to Canada and Mexico have decreased by 26.4% and 59.7% respectively.

The Asian region is still the largest export market for Chinese clothing. The total export volume of the former July reached US $23 billion 991 million, a decrease of 0.6% compared with the same period last year, and its exports to Southeast Asia and the Middle East have shrunk, down 24.6% and 19% respectively from the same period last year.

In recent years, the ASEAN region has become an important growth point for China's textile and clothing exports. However, since the beginning of this year, the global economic growth has slowed down, and the ASEAN region has generally suffered inflationary pressure, thus affecting the import demand of related consumer goods. The export speed of our clothing to some ASEAN countries has slowed down significantly.

Data show that in July of this year, China exported $698 million and US $470 million to Singapore and Malaysia respectively, representing a decrease of 56.5% and 6.5% compared with the same period last year. However, exports to Vietnam and Indonesia continued to grow rapidly, up 288.7% or 48% over the same period last year, but only about 0.35%.

With the appreciation of RMB and the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States, the export market of China's garment industry has been pferred from the United States to the European Union and other regions including developing countries, but now the European economy has gradually declined, and the inflation problems in emerging markets such as ASEAN and the Middle East are serious.
