Mexico Implements Retaliatory Tariffs On Certain Yarn And Other Industries In The United States.

Mexico announced in March 16th 09 that it would re levy tariffs of up to 45% on imports of roughly 90% of the products originating in the United States.

The cargo pilot project has been implemented for about 18 months, allowing some of the Mexico trucks authorized by the US Department of pportation to operate outside designated border areas outside the United States.

Although most of the products affected are agricultural products, yarn and carpets classified under the uniform customs tariff code (HS) will also be affected:

5511.10.01: yarns (except sewing thread), retail staple fibres, synthetic staple fibres (containing 85% or more synthetic staple fibres)

5511.30.01: man-made staple yarns (except sewing thread), synthetic staple fibres, man-made staple fibres

5704.90.99: other carpet and other felt textile floor coverings, not tufted carpets or flocking carpet, whether or not finished products.

5705.00.99: other carpet and other textile floor coverings, whether or not finished products.

The above HS tariff code refers to the Mexico tariff classification.

The duty rate applicable to the yarn is 15%, and the duty rate applicable to the carpet is 20%.

All imported American goods must be taxed if they are listed in the harmonized tax classification, even if they are previously eligible for duty-free imports.
