Bangladesh Clothing And Apparel Owners Propose Minimum Wage

Taking into account the growth of clothing prices in the global market, Bangladesh clothing owners are now preparing to fix the minimum wage of workers to 2000 Taka, close to $29 / month.

At last week's meeting of the minimum wage Bureau, clothing and clothing owners proposed that the minimum wage for new workers should be set at 1887 Taka / month (close to US $27 / month).

In Vietnam, the wages of such workers are 90 dollars, while the minimum wage in India is 135 dollars / month.

Hiiudin, vice-chairman of the Bangladesh clothing and Garment Manufacturers Association (BGMEA) and the representative of the minimum wage Bureau, said: the clothing and garment industry may have a fixed minimum wage of 2000 tack / month.

At the beginning of 2006, the three party organization fixed the minimum wage to 1662.50 rupees / month. The three parties included the government, BGMEA and workers representatives.

But the main buyers have gradually increased the price of clothing products, especially knitted garments, which has increased by about 30%.

In the past fiscal year, Bangladesh's clothing sector contributed $12 billion 590 million to the country's total export earnings of US $14 billion.

In April, Bangladesh's clothing and garment exports increased year-on-year.

In April, exports of knitted garments and woven garments increased by 13.52% and 13% respectively.

Bangladesh garment manufacturers and Exporters Association will discuss the issue of fixing the minimum wage structure for new workers with economists and legal practitioners and other stakeholders.

The clothing sector in Bangladesh consists of more than 2300 units, about 3 million workers, most of whom are female workers.
