In April 9, 2020, the US Department of Agriculture released the global cotton supply and demand monthly report. The decline in global consumption resulted in a reduction in trade volume in 2019/20 and an increase in final inventory. Consumption of all major cotton producers has been reduced, and global consumption has dropped by 1 million 656 thousand and 800 tons this month, down 6.4% from last month. Total consumption in 2019/20 is expected to be 24 million 110 thousand tons, 8.1% less than that in 2018/19. This will be one of the biggest annual drops since record. Global trade volume decreased by 654 thousand tons in 2019/20 this month. Due to the relatively small increase in inventory and production at the beginning of this month, the 2019/20 inventory increased by 1 million 722 thousand tons at the end of this year, 2 million 398 thousand tons higher than the same period last year.

About US cotton data: in 2019/20, US cotton exports and consumption were substantially lower than last month, and stocks at the end of the year rose sharply. The almost unprecedented global economic slowdown is expected to significantly reduce global cotton demand and trade. It also led to the biggest monthly downward adjustment in US cotton exports: 327 thousand tons to 3 million 270 thousand tons. Consumption fell by 21 thousand and 800 tons, and terminal stocks increased by 348 thousand and 800 tons. It is estimated that the final inventory will reach 1 million 460 thousand and 600 tons, equivalent to 37% of the total inventory, compared with 26% in March. Cotton farmers are expected to receive an annual average price of 59 cents per pound, down 1 cents from last month.
