According to statistics released by the Statistics Bureau, consumer prices in the country (2010) in September

It was 114.4, an increase of 1.8% over the same period last year (112.4), a 3 month low and a 2.1% lower than the market forecast.

The intensity of the inhibition of import inflation, coupled with the slowing down of food and pportation prices after the festival, led to a lower inflation rate than expected in September, and provided the central bank with a temporary interest rate increase. It is expected that the central bank will continue to maintain overnight interest rates to 2.75% by the end of this year.


In September, the prices of major consumer goods increased significantly, including alcoholic beverages and cigarettes (up 3.1%), miscellaneous products and services (up 2.8%), and non-alcoholic beverages and foods (up 2.3%).


Other items of rising prices include leisure, service and culture (up 2.1%), education (up 1.7%), restaurants and hotels (up 1.7%), health care (up 1.6%), pportation (up 1.3%), property, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (up 1.1%), home appliances, household equipment and daily necessities (up 0.6%).


The decline was for clothing and footwear (down 1.5%) and newsletter (down 0.3%).


The cumulative consumer price index for Malaysia from 1 to September is 113.6 points, up 1.5% from 111.9 in the same period last year.
